UK Workers To Receive Record Wage Increase
Next year, British employees will benefit from the highest increase in real wages since before the recession, according to a new forecast by Korn Ferry Hay Group.
The National Living Wage and lower inflation levels are set to give UK workers their largest real wage increase since 2008, according to the forecast. The average salary will increase by 2.3%.
While the overall picture is positive, there are variations in the British labour market. Employees at fast-moving consumer goods companies can expect to see their salaries increase by between three per cent and 20%.
In contrast, the oil and gas sector will see a more conservative real wage increase of 0.6%, according to the forecast.
UK Firms Still Hiring
Permanent staff placements increased at a stronger rate in November, with the rate of expansion quickening to a seven-month high. Contract staff billings also rose at a faster pace, with growth the sharpest in five months according to the latest Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG Report on Jobs.
Demand for staff continued to rise in November. Although easing to a 29-month low, the rate of expansion remained marked overall. The availability of staff for both permanent and contract roles fell at sharp and accelerated rates last month. Shortages of candidates for a range of skill-sets were reported by recruiters.
Permanent staff salaries also continued to rise in the last month. The latest increase was again strong, with panellists citing competition for qualified staff. Contract staff hourly pay rates rose at the fastest pace in three months, although growth remained slower than that seen for permanent employees.
Outsourcing Shows High Growth
A recent report prepared by Oxford Economics for the Business Services Association (BSA) reveals that in the third quarter of 2015, £2.2 billion of outsourcing contracts were signed, an increase of 69% on the previous year.
According to the BSA, an increase in outsourcing of 1% adds £2 billion in productivity contributions to the UK economy each year.
Melanie Maxwell Scott, Director of Policy at the BSA said: “The notion that businesses or governments should try to do everything themselves is as misguided as it is old-fashioned. Bringing in experts simply makes sense.”
